Kremlin's Nashi Outperforms the United Opposition Movement, "Other
Russia"
On Saturday, December 18, the new opposition bloc "Other Russia,"
uniting liberals with groups as far to the right as the National
Bolsheviks, held its first rally in Moscow's Triumph Square, attended by
some 1,500 to 2,500 people. The following day, the Kremlin's
"anti-fascist youth organization" called Nashi (ours in Russian) staged
a lavish demonstration of some 70,000 members.

The investigation of the murder of former Russian intelligence officer
Alexander Litvinenko in London has taken a new twist as the radioactive
poison polonium-210 is now traced to Moscow via Hamburg. On December 11,
German police launched an investigation of Dmitry Kovtun, 41, a Russian
businessman and former resident of Hamburg, on suspicion that he
knowingly carried the toxic substance from Russia to Germany and then to
London. However, the possibility remains, German police caution, that
Kovtun was a poison victim who was releasing polonium through
perspiration. In Moscow, there are signs of increasing official
nervousness about the case.

On December 6, President Vladimir Putin called on leaders of political
parties to take part in the struggle against extremism, RIA Novosti
reported. He said that "countering extremism is not only a state
responsibility, although the state should address it first and foremost.
Those who preach racial, national or religious hatred must know that
their
views will provoke an appropriate response."
But the response of the courts is not particularly harsh, and local
officials, including the police, do not feel that it is their
responsibility to protect vulnerable minorities.
