The International Labour Organization: A Handbook for Minorities and
Indigenous Peoples

Minority Rights Group International and Anti-Slavery International

Author: Chandra Roy and Mike Kaye

Publication date: May 2002

Series: Minority Rights Group International Training Material

The International Labour Organization (ILO) is the United Nations (UN)
agency specializing in labour rights and has a mandate which
encompasses a range of socio-economic issues, including the protection
and promotion of human rights. This Handbook gives an insiders view
of how the ILO works. It explains how the ILO can be used by
non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and others, to promote and
protect minority and indigenous peoples rights. This new Handbook
from Minority Rights Group International (MRG) and Anti-Slavery
International provides an overview of the ILOs structure, relevant
committees and methods, in an accessible format. It offers practical
advice, case studies and step-by-step guidance on working with the
ILO; showing, for example, how NGOs can provide information to the
ILO, how they can influence its agenda, and how they can work with
bodies such as trade unions to further minority and indigenous
peoples concerns.

While this Handbook is aimed at minorities and indigenous peoples
organizations, and other NGOs working to promote human rights, it will
be of interest to anyone wishing to learn more about the ILO and its
role in fighting discrimination and protecting rights.

Chandra Roy is an international lawyer who helped establish the
Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO). She has worked
at the Equality and Employment Branch of the ILO legal department.
Mike Kaye is the Communications Coordinator for Anti-Slavery
International.
