Russia's leaders and people commemorated the 65th anniversary of the
victory over Nazism with welcome departures from the routine that may
yet prove historic. Even though President Barack Obama declined an
invitation to attend, he enhanced the festive mood of Russia's most
important secular holiday by praising his Russian counterpart Dmitry
Medvedev and recalling the intensity of the wartime alliance between the
two nations.
