The month of December has seen the release of several key European
Commission publications in the field of diversity and
non-discrimination:

 
European Anti-discrimination Law Review, issues 6/7

The European Network of Legal Experts in the non-discrimination field
has recently produced the combined 6th and 7th issue of the European
Anti-discrimination Law Review, published by the European Commission's
DG Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities. The review
provides an overview of the developments in European anti-discrimination
law and policy in the year prior to publication. 

In this issue you will find expert contributions on a variety of issues
related to non-discrimination, from gender equality to mandatory
retirement, as well as legal policy developments at the European level
and updates from the member states. 
 
 
Limits and Potential of the Concept of Indirect Discrimination

Alongside this report, the newly published European Commission
publication on the Limits and Potential of the Concept of Indirect
Discrimination elaborates on the firm place of indirect discrimination
in both international human rights law and EC law. 

The report also discusses the definition of indirect discrimination
under the Racial and Employment Equality Directives and the legal
concept of indirect discrimination within the European Commission
context. Finally, the report puts forward a number of national case
studies highlighting issues concerning the definition and application of
the concept of indirect discrimination.

To coincide with the conference on the Business Case for Diversity 2008,
which took place on the 11th and 12th of December, the European
Commission's report on "Continuing the Diversity Journey - Business
Practices, Perspectives and Benefits", provided an important basis for
discussion. 

The publication brings together surveys analyzing issues relating to
diversity in the workplace, with a particular focus on; the business
case for diversity in SMEs, diversity, innovation and productivity in
the workplace, diversity charters and diversity and business schools.
The overall goal of this publication is to provide guidance and support
to companies in different stages of implementing diversity in the
workplace.
 

Sharing successful activities in Europe - Bulgaria

Equal treatment is a human right. On the 8th of December, the Bulgarian
Commission for Protection Against Discrimination, in conjunction with
the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture, organised the 2nd annual "World of
Diversity" Concert, to celebrate International Human Rights Day. 

Through their performances, artists celebrated a multitude of ethnic and
cultural traditions from Bulgaria. A "World of Diversity" photo
exhibition was also unveiled, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the
proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Over 350
people attended the event, including high level officials from 11
national embassies.
