An unexpected, almost freakish sequence of events in Russia's Pacific
Coast city of Vladivostok is attracting increasing attention as a
possible indication of what may come to pass in a country that is just
beginning to feel the impact of the worldwide economic collapse. Barely
mentioned in the Russian press, on December 21, 2008, the OMON riot
police dispersed a demonstration in the Primorye (Maritime) territory.
No oppositionists, the demonstrators protested new, higher import duties
on foreign-made cars.
