New EU web portal on social affairs

A new website on employment, social affairs and equal opportunities has
been launched by the European Commission (http://ec.europa.eu/social ).
The site aims to explain how European Union policies benefit citizens.
It also provides more detailed and technical information for specialised
audiences including policy-makers, stakeholder organisations, the media
and experts.

The features offered by the new website include regularly updated news
and features, improved navigation, a dedicated search engine, an
e-library gathering together important documents and publications, and a
multimedia section.

The website was launched in English, French and German on 2 July 2008 to
coincide with the Commission's adoption of a renewed social agenda for
the EU. It will be available in all official EU languages (except
Gaelic) from mid-October 2008. The Commission welcomes comments and
suggestions from users of the website. ([email protected])

Website Academic Network of European Disability experts' (ANED) launched

The Academic Network of European Disability experts (ANED) has launched
their website at www.disability-europe.net.

ANED was established by the European Commission in 2008 to provide
academic and scientific support and advice for its non-discrimination
policy (http://ec.europa.eu/social/main.jsp?catId=423&langId=en). In
particular, the activities of the Network will support the future
development of the EU Disability Action Plan and practical
implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of
Disabled People in Europe. The Network is managed by Human European
Consultancy (NL) - http://www.humanconsultancy.com/ and the Centre for
Disability Studies at the University of Leeds (UK) -
http://www.leeds.ac.uk/disability-studies/.

The Network includes national contacts in 30 European countries and
experts in particular fields who contribute analysis on specific themes.
It is therefore a very ambitious project that seeks to promote the
sharing of research and policy knowledge, and public access to relevant
information about the situation of disabled people in European countries
and the development of polices for equality and social inclusion.

The website includes information about the work of ANED, links to
detailed information and resources in each country, and reports on key
themes.
