THE KREMLIN FEARS UNREST
Stability has been Vladimir Putin's proudest achievement as Russia's
president. Disorder, on the other hand, has been his recurrent
nightmare, and it is that terrifying word he has often used to
characterize the era of
his predecessor and one-time patron, Boris Yeltsin. But is that
stability now at risk? Could it be that the Kremlin's self-confident
initial declarations that Russia is unaffected by the economic problems
spreading across the world were wrong? Listening to the latest speeches
by Putin's hand-picked successor Dmitry Medvedev, one senses something
close to panic among Russia's leaders.

NEW OPPOSITION MOVEMENT TO BE LAUNCHED IN RUSSIA.
Yet Another Coalition of Opposition Forces Braves Sabotage and Voter

A new democratic movement provisionally called Solidarity, with a
founding congress scheduled to open on December 13, has defined the
defense of the Russian constitution as its main goal, according to a
RIA-Novosti report dated November 6 and quoting Boris Nemtsov, an
opposition politician and former leader of the Union of Right Forces
(SPS). Listed among the founders of the movement are the SPS's former
leader Nikita Belykh; the head of the United Civil Front and former
presidential candidate Garri Kasparov; the leaders of the Yabloko
party's St Petersburg and youth branches Maksim Reznik and Ilya Yashin;

RUSSIA’S RENEWED STRENGTH: WHAT IS IT FOR?

Identifying the Kremlin’s objectives has been a major task for Russians
and the rest of the world that is trying to live with Russia. Unlike
many articles on the subject over the years, a recent exchange in the
Internet forum www.opendemocracy.net, has generated more light than
heat. The forum says it is dedicated to publishing news analysis and
commentary from a pro-democracy, pro-human rights perspective.

1. REWIRING THE WEST?

2. RUSSIA REACTS IN RESPONSE TO ‘EXTERNAL IRRITANTS’
