Ten years of protecting national minorities and regional or minority
languages
Ms Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of
Europe, and Mr Dusan Caplovic, Deputy Prime Minister in the Slovak
Government opened this morning 11 March 2008 a Conference in Strasbourg
under the auspices of the Slovak Presidency of the Committee of
Ministers. This significant event marks the 10th anniversary of the
entry into force of the Framework Convention for the Protection of
National Minorities and the European Charter for Regional or Minority
Languages on 1 February and 1 March 1998 respectively.
The conference will review the experience accumulated over the last ten
years and will also provide an opportunity to reflect on the role of the
international and domestic institutions which implement both
conventions. It will examine the impact of these conventions on national
policies, legislation and practice regarding the protection of
minorities and their languages.
