OSCE Mediterranean Seminar on Combating Intolerance and Discrimination
and Promoting Mutual Respect and Understanding
Tel Aviv 18-19 December 2007
The annual OSCE Mediterranean Seminar represents the highlight of each
year's work between the OSCE and its Mediterranean Partners for
Co-operation. It gathers representatives of the participating States and
the Mediterranean Partners, as well as international organizations and
civil society to discuss a theme that is of topical relevance to
security in the Mediterranean and in the broader OSCE region. Reflecting
a priority that has been highlighted for the third year in a row by the
Mediterranean Partners, the 2007 Mediterranean Seminar concentrates on
promoting tolerance and non-discrimination.
One of the recommendations made in the context of the 2006 Mediterranean
Seminar was to strengthen dialogue with civil society and the
involvement of Mediterranean NGOs in OSCE Mediterranean Seminars and
other OSCE events. In order to take into account this recommendation,
the 2007 Mediterranean Seminar will, therefore, have a preparatory
meeting on the role of civil society in combating intolerance and
discrimination and promoting mutual respect and understanding in the
OSCE participating States and the Mediterranean Partners for
Co-operation, with particular reference to the role of women in
promoting tolerance and non-discrimination.
The aim of the civil society meeting is:
� To provide civil society with an opportunity to prepare
recommendations to be presented at the opening of the Seminar;
� To discuss current issues and priorities related to discrimination and
the promotion of mutual respect and understanding;
� To exchange information on best practices;
� To facilitate and enhance coalition-building across diverse cultural
and religious communities and civil society groups throughout the
OSCE region and the Mediterranean Partner States;
The participation and contribution of civil society is highly welcomed
in both meetings!
