Serbian cultural center opens in Romania

BUCHAREST -- The Serbian Cultural Center St. Sava was officially opened
Saturday in Bucharerst, Romania.

The opening ceremony was held as part of the Days of Transfiguration  
holiday, an annual cultural and spiritual manifestation of the Serb  
community in Romania that has been organized for the past 14 years.

A literary award named Great Bazja?ka Charter, established as part of  
the event, was presented yesterday to Serb poet Miodrag Pavlovi?.

The manifestation gathered more than 5,000 people, including members  
of Serbian and Romanian political and cultural elite, and church  
dignitaries.

The Romanian Government set aside EUR 150,000 for the construction of  
the Serbian Cultural Center, while the Serbian Government made a  
contribution of EUR 8,500.

The Romanian census figures from 2002 show that some 22,000 ethnic  
Serbs live in that
country.
