YOUNG ETHNIC ROMAS ASK FOR STATE UNIVERSITY IN MOTHER TONGUE
CLUJ-NAPOCA - Various ethnic Roma youngsters' lit candles Tuesday,
October 17, in Matei Corvin piazza, the position of the candles
accounting for the word "Bolyai-Egyetemet (Bolyai University)".
They ask for the setting up of a state university in ethnic Hungarian
language and for the financing from Romania's state budget of ethnic
Hungarian private universities Sapientia and Partium.
"Ethnic Hungarians in Romania are the only numerous ethnic group in
Europe that has not established an academic education. Babes-Bolyai
university is not subject to multiculturalism because the education in
ethnic Hungarian tongue has no financial autonomy and cannot be
efficiently organized. We pay the taxes of Romania and we think we are
entitled to a state university in ethnic Hungarian," said Cristina
Sandor, president with the Hungarian Youngsters' Council in Romania.
The multi-cultural university Babes-Bolyai, or UBB, was set up in Cluj,
central Transylvania, with departments in ethnic Hungarian, German,
Hebrew. Many ethnic Hungarians ask for UBB split-up and for the setting
up of an exclusively ethnic Hungarian university, namely Bolyai,
financed from Romania's state budget.
Ethnic Hungarians ask the private universities Sapientia in Cluj-Napoca
and Partium in Oradea receive financing from Romania's budget.

EVICTED ETHNIC ROMA LIVE IN DIFFICULT CONDITIONS
TULCEA - European Center For Ethnic Romas Rights and Ethnic Roma
Association "Egalitatea de Sanse" (Equal chances) warns upon the
dramatic consequences of evicting the people from a dwelling in Tulcea,
eastern Romania, on October 11, 2006.
Thus, a group of some 150 citizens, most of whom are ethnic Roma, was
evicted from a dwelling subsequent to a definitive order passed by
Tulcea court. The two organizations ask the local authorities to solve
the situation of the ethnic Romas, due to the breach of several rights.

PROGRAMS FOR ETHNIC ROMAS IN HADARENI
CLUJ/MIERCUREA-CIUC - Center of Resources for Ethnic Roma Communities
will implement the project "Partnership and communitarian development in
Hadareni", during October - December 2006.
The project consists in a briefing and stimulation campaign on the civic
attendance, with the involvement of 10 ethnic Romas and non-ethnic Roma
students. The project also supposes a training session of the Local
Management Committee of Hadareni program for communitarian development,
writing financing proposals and development of partnerships,
negotiation, conflicts' management, and strategic planning, involving 20
persons.
In related development, the organizations Balkan Investigative Reporting
Network Romania and Freedom House Romania organized during October 21
and 22, training on understanding ethnic diversity and identity,
stressing upon the status of the ethnic Romas in Hadareni, addressed the
journalists in counties Alba, Cluj, Harghita, and Mures. The training
will be organized in Miercurea Ciuc. The journalists with the printed
press or audiovisual medias throughout these counties will meet persons
specialized in the issue of minorities as well as representatives of the
NGOs with background in media and communications fields.
The project is financed by the National Agency for Ethnic Romas within
the Program for communitarian development in Hadareni. An interethnic
conflict took place in 1993, in Hadareni, central Transylvania. The
conflict caused the death of a Romanian and of three ethnic Roma
citizens.

ONE AUTONOMY TO PREVAIL IN ROMANIA - PRESIDENT
TIRGU MURES - Romania's president Traian Basescu said on October 17 that
Odorheiu Secuiesc (town inhabited in majority by ethnic Hungarians) will
have as much autonomy as any town countrywide, as the Constitution of
Romania cannot be overlooked.
Asked by the journalists about the declarations of UDMR leader Marko
Bela on the risk of bursting interethnic conflicts that will not lead to
the autonomy of the Szecklers' County, central Transylvania, the
president said: "This is an overstatement. Romanian citizens must comply
with the Constitution of Romania for not breaking the law. We have the
right to expression."
The president said the "breaking of the law" is fueled by concrete
actions.
Basescu said that Marko Bela's statements in the last period are
"electoral approaches" trying to convince the electorate with a more
radical vision, and to attract it toward UDMR.
The president was the in favor of a "widened autonomy," conferring the
local administration greater role in making decisions regarding the
community, education or health.
