CALL FOR PAPERS
The Association for the Study of Ethnicity and
Nationalism (ASEN) is holding its 17th Annual Conference, entitled
�The Dark Face of Nationalism: Violence, Extremism and the Nation�,
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday,
April 17-19, 2007,
at the London School of Economics.
This conference will explore those aspects of nationalism that most
often make headlines, generating a popular impression of nationalism as
an overwhelmingly negative force in world history. This compels us, as
scholars in the field of nationalism studies, to confront certain
questions addressing the extent to which such an
impression may or may not be justified: Are violence and exclusion the
inevitable consequences of nationalism? To what extent is the discourse
of the nation implicated in the violent ideologies of the last century?
What is the relationship between nationalism and ideologies such as
fascism, racism and religious fundamentalism? The conference will
address these questions and others, in the course of examining the
various manifestations of violent and extreme nationalism, both
historical and current, around the globe.
The first day of the conference is dedicated to a general discussion of
the topic by leading scholars in the field, including:
- Mark Juergensmeyer, University of California, Santa Barbara
- Peter Van Der Veer, University of Amsterdam
- Carolyn Marvin, Annenberg School of Communication, University of
Pensylvania
- Montserrat Guibernau, Queen Mary, London
- Paul Bew, Queens University Belfast
Suggested themes include the connection between nations/nationalism and:
- Fascism
- Revolution
- Racism and Xenophobia
- Terrorism and Religious Fundamentalism
- Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing
The 2007 Conference Committee is now calling for papers to be presented
between Tuesday, April 17 and Thursday, April 19, 2007. The application
is open to any researcher who is interested in the study of nationalism
and/or ethnicity, and PhD students and young scholars are particularly
encouraged to apply. The abstracts of the proposed papers should not
exceed 500 words and are expected by November 1, 2006. The Committee
will notify applicants by November 30, 2006.

Suggestions for panels and additional themes are also welcome. Papers
submitted to the conference will be considered for publication in a
special issue of Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism (SEN).
Please note that ASEN cannot cover travel and accommodation costs.
Presenters are expected to register for the
conference.
