Candidate for Bashcan accuses Vladimir Voronin of electoral campaigning
against him Mayor of Ceadar Lunga town, Mihail Formuzal, candidate for
the Bashcan (Governor) of Gagauz Yeri, accuses President Vladimir
Voronin of electoral campaigning against him for religious reasons.

Mihail Formuzal made a declaration saying the head of state Vladimir
Voronin on October 21 visited Comrat town where, at a meeting, he said
that Formuzal cannot be elected as Bashkan because he is Baptist, while
90% of the population in Moldova is Orthodox.

Formuzal says that the statements by Vladimir Voronin aim to provoke a
conflict between the residents of Gagauzia on a religious platform.
According to him, these statements run counter to the Constitution of
the Republic of Moldova which stipulates that the people are free to
choose their religion.

The head of state last week had a meeting with members of the Gagauz
Central Election Commission where he said that the examination of legal
cases involving candidates for the Bashkan should be suspended during
the electoral campaign so as to ensure free and fair elections. Of the
four candidates for Governor of Gagauzia, only Mihail Formuzal is
investigated, for misconduct in office.

The elections for the Bashkan are set for December 3.
