The CRE's inquiry into equality, race relations and sites for Roma and
Irish Travellers

Councils are failing Roma and Irish travellers, who have the poorest
life chances of any ethnic group in Britain, a damning report from the
Commission for Racial Equality has claimed. The 290 page report said it
had identified a 'culture of oversight' that made it difficult to
provide services for Roma and Irish travellers, especially housing and
homelessness. While council officers knew a great deal about other
ethnic groups it found that this was rarely the case for Roma and Irish
travellers. And despite a mix of living conditions, in many cases the
commission found they were still far below those expected in
conventional housing.

The report, Common Ground: Equality, good race relations and sites for
Gypsies and Irish Travellers, a summary of its findings, and copies of
the questionnaires sent to local authorities, are available at

as a Menace to Peace or as an Opportunity? The role of European local
authorities in Budapest on 8 and 9 June 2006. The event will take place

from each other and make their citizens feel appreciated and respected,
