Decision paves way for PROGRESS
 
The European Parliament and Council�s official Decision (1672/2006/EC)
on PROGRESS will come into force on 5 December. This paves the way for
the start of the programme, which will run from January 2007 to the end
of 2013.

PROGRESS (http://ec.europa.eu/employment_social/progress/index_en.html)
will build on the Community Action Programme to combat discrimination,
which began in 2001 and draws to a close this year. It also brings
together the work of other EU actions in the field of employment and
social affairs into one programme.

�Anti-discrimination and diversity� is one of five sections under
PROGRESS. The Decision outlines the role of the programme to support a
better understanding of the situation in this field through analysis,
studies and statistics. Monitoring legislation, networking between
specialised bodies, raising awareness and developing capacity are the
other areas described.

The Decision includes information on types of actions that will be
funded and on access to the programme. Final corrections are still to be
made to the financial details provided.

Truck Tour 2006 reaches final destination

On 21 November, the �For Diversity. Against Discrimination�
(http://www.stop-discrimination.info/) Truck Tour 2006 made its final
city stop in Valencia, Spain. The tour has taken in 13 different
European countries since it started in Helsinki in August.

The Truck Tour (http://tt06.stop-discrimination.info/) has succeeded in
bringing together a wide range of organisations and participants to
debate issues and raise awareness. It has also offered the opportunity
to take part in activities such as the Mobile Ability Park, where people
can experience the barriers faced by wheelchair users.

The stop in the Parisian suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois coincided with
France�s first National Day for Diversity
(http://www.journee-diversite.com/) on 4 November. Diversity and
discrimination are hot topics in the area. Participants raised the issue
of prejudice about ethnicity and also the stigma attached to living in
certain postcodes.

Companies and recruitment agencies were among those who took part in the
Paris event, presenting diversity policies, participating in a debate
and meeting jobseekers to collect CVs and offer on-the-spot interviews.

This year�s Truck Tour follows editions in both 2004 and 2005.

Roma news
 
The European Roma Information Office (ERIO - http://www.erionet.org/),
an international advocacy organisation promoting and defending the
rights of Roma in Europe, has re-launched its website. Currently in
English, the site will soon be available in 11 languages, including
Romani.

The European Roma Rights Centre (http://www.errc.org/) has published
findings from five years of research into the exclusion or inferior
provision of health care to Roma. The report, �Ambulance not on the way:
the disgrace of health care for Roma in Europe�
(http://www.errc.org/cikk.php?cikk=2632) highlights what it describes as
a �serious gap in health status for Roma and non-Roma in some
countries�.
