An internet radio formed in Australia by Romani people

started online today at www.familyradio-australia.com. This radio was
created by Czech and Slovak Roma people in Australia. "After a while
living in Australia i found out that the term Gypsy means hipies and we
are known as hipies by the Australian society. It was a bit of shock for
me so i asked a number of people who they thought gypsies were and what
their culture was about. Their answers were simply reffered to as
'travelers' or being unsure," 

PM Paroubek to run in Usti in 2006 general election

Usti nad Labem, 29. 8. 2005, 19:41 (CTK) - Prime Minister and Social
Democrats (CSSD) deputy chairman Jiri Paroubek will run in the Usti nad
Labem region, north Bohemia, in the next election to the Chamber of
Deputies in mid-2006, Paroubek told reporters today. Within the
programme of economic growth, the CSSD in Usti nad Labem plans to focus
on unemployment, which is one of the highest in the country, especially
among Romanies. "It is a matter of several generations," Paroubek said
commenting on Romany unemployment. 

Police detain suspects of attack on Romanies in Plzen

Plzen, 22. 8. 2005, 13:31 (CTK) - Police have detained four young men
aged 17-19 suspected of a racially motivated attack on Romanies in
Plzen, police spokeswoman Michaela Altmannova told CTK today. According
to police, the suspects assaulted three Romanies, two men aged 18 and
19, and a 18-year-old woman, in Plzen's Jungmannova street on April 17
in the night. They called the Romanies vulgar and racially motivated
names, beat them up and kicked them. They allegedly sprayed unknown
substance into the eyes of the older Romany man. 

Meeting commemorates Romany suffering in Hodonin internment camp

Brno/Hodonin, 21. 8. 2005, 19:39 (CTK) - About 120 people, including
Ombudsman Otakar Motejl and head of Romany Association in Moravia Karel
Holomek, met in Hodonin near Kunstat today to lay wreaths at the
monument to the inmates of the local wartime internment camp for
Romanies and commemorate the victims. In his address, Holomek called for
a change in the Czech law in support of the Romany victims of the
Holocaust. Out of some 7,000 Romany applicants for compensation, about 3
percent have succeeded so far, he said. 

Education Ministry to support poor Romany students

Prague, 17. 8. 2005, 19:26 (CTK) - The Romany secondary school students
whose families could not bear the cost of the studies, the ministry
press department told CTK today. Education facilities can apply for a
contribution for Romany students' studies, meals, travel expenses and
accommodation for September to December till the end of September. Only
students who regularly attend school and have no greater discipline
problems can be included in the "Support to Romany secondary school
pupils" programme, the ministry said. 

Romany association Savore faces financial problems

Olomouc, 13. 8. 2005, 20:45 (CTK) - The Romany n Savore in Sumperk,
north Moravia, organising free time activities for Romany children, may
have to end its work as it lacks money for its employees' wages, the
local paper Moravsky sever writes today. "Savore employs only three
people but about a hundred children are attending the centre regularly.
Earlier we always succeeded in getting money for wages from subsidies,
but this year the ministries changed priorities and we received much
lower financial support than last year.
