THE LOGIC IS STRANGE BUT FAMILIAR
Denials of Ugly Reality Make No Sense Yet Persist
Day after day, one ugly incident after another, Russian and Ukrainian
officials but especially police stubbornly insist that skinheads just
happen to beat up people of non-Russian ethnicity and the explanation is
that they are hooligans or thieves or drunk, or all of the above.
Juvenile delinquency or robbery may occur but not, officials repeat,
racism, xenophobia, or, God forbid, antisemitism. The illogic of denying
the existence of racism, xenophobia, and antisemitism even when the
facts stare you in the face harks back to the Soviet practice of denying
a negative phenomenon because it is inconsistent with Communist
ideological precepts.
