Ikea goes bilingual in northern Sweden

The Swedish furniture giant Ikea is looking for bilingual staff for its
new store to be opened on the Swedish-Finnish border for autumn 2006.
The new store will be located in the Swedish town of Haparanda, a
next-door-neighbour with Finnish Tornio and close to several other
mid-sized Swedish and Finnish towns.
Most of Europe celebrates linguistic diversity

Yesterday most of Europe celebrated its linguistic diversity. Organised
annually since 2001 by the Council of Europe, the European Day of
Languages aims to encourage language learning among all age groups and
to emphasise the importance of linguistic diversity. Each year, the EU
spends over � 30 million on language learning. The day coincided with
the launch of a new Eurobarometer survey showing that half of Europeans
could speak a language other than their mother tongue.
Hungary supports Romanian accession amidst efforts to secure Szekerland
autonomy

The Hungarian Parliament agreed with Romania�s accession to the EU
yesterday. Efforts by some groups to tie the "yes" vote to Romania
granting autonomy to its Hungarian-speaking minority failed. The
Hungarian Parliament agreed to Romania joining the European Union with
257 �Yes� votes, six �No� and one abstaining.
Recruits no longer need Irish to join the police

An exam pass in the Irish language will no longer be required for
recruits to the Irish police force, an Garda Siochana.
Navarre government ignores Council of Europe recommendations on Basque

"We will follow the same path". That is the answer Miguel Sanz,
President of the Navarre Government, gave to Strasbourg on Friday
regarding Basque, days after the Council of Europe criticised the
linguistic policies of Sanz�s executive.
