UZBEK CRISIS ENTERS NEW PHASE
Governments and organizations are lining up to condemn or defend the
Uzbek government's brutal suppression of protesters, as the regime is
tightening its grip over a restive population. The principal issue is
human rights and democracy, with Uzbekistan's strategic role in the war
on terrorism looming in the background. The pressure is on the dictator
who thinks he can tough it out while citing the danger of Islamic
terrorism.
