IRISH LANGUAGE ON THE AGENDA AS AHERN GOES TO MADRID

Dublin's request for Irish to be recognised as an official language of
the EU is on the agenda as Taoiseach Bertie Ahern travels to Madrid
today to meet Spanish premier, Jose Luis Zapatero. The Spanish are
insisting that it's "regional" languages must also be given greater
recognition by the EU.
ALL OVER FOR SWEDEN�S FINNISH DAILY RUOTSIN SANOMAT

There seems little hope left for Sweden�s only Finnish daily newspaper
Ruotsin Sanomat. No offer to buy the paper has been made, and the time
for bidding finished at midnight on Wednesday.
ESTONIAN PARLIAMENT DISCUSSES LANGUAGE DISPUTE IN NORTH-EAST ESTONIA

A group of Estonian right-wing MPs wrote a formal complaint last week to
Allar J�ks, Chancellor of Justice, protesting over the use of Russian as
a working language in Narva City Council. Pro Patria party MPs, Andres
Herkel, Peeter Tulviste, Mart Nutt and Helir-Valdor Seeder, claim that
city council sessions "are systematically held in Russian", and that it
violates the law on local governance.
GWYNFOR: WALES AND THE WELSH LANGUAGE LOSE A HERO

Wales and the Welsh language has lost one of its most charismatic
leaders. Dr Gwynfor Evans, a former Plaid Cymru - the Welsh nationalist
party - leader and its first member of parliament, died on 21 April
2005. He has been called the "greatest Welshman of the twentieth century
and the greatest Welsh national political figure of all time".
SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT PASSES GAELIC LANGUAGE BILL

The passage of the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Bill by the Scottish
Parliament on Thursday (21/04/2005) marked a historic victory for Gaelic
speakers who have campaigned for the language to be granted official
recognition in law.
AUSTRIA: THIRD "CONSENSUS CONFERENCE" ON SLOVENE-GERMAN BILINGUAL SIGNS
WILL TAKE PLACE ON APRIL 29th

Austrian chancellor Wolfgang Sch�ssel announced that the third of a
series of planned conferences, with the aim to find a consensus on the
issue of additional bilingual signs in southern Carinthia, will take
place on April 29th.
