IRISH NGO, POBAL, CALL FOR LANGUAGE ACT

POBAL, the umbrella organisation for the Irish language in the north of
Ireland are calling for an Irish Language Act. The NGO has been working
for several months with advice and support from international language
legislation experts on a draft Irish Language Act for the north. 
 

SLOVENIAN DAILY PRIMORSKI DNEVNIK CELEBRATES 60TH ANNIVERSARY

It is the voice of the Slovenian community in Italy and it has been in
existence for 60 years. The daily newspaper Primorski Dnevnik was first
issued in Triest/Trieste on the 13th of May 1945, a few days after the
end of the Second World War, and continues to thrive today. 


CONFERENCE CALLS FOR CHARTER TO GUARANTEE HIGHER EDUCATION IN MINORITY
LANGUAGES

The First European Conference on Higher Education in the Languages of
National Minorities was held in Cluj/Kolozsv�r and online with
participation from all over Europe. They examined the possibilities of
establishing or extending higher education in the mother tongue of
"national minorities" based on the principles of the European Union and
the Bologna Process and they adopted a Charter of Higher Education in
Minority-Languages in Europe.


FRISIAN SOAP BAAS BOPPE BAAS MAINSTREAMS ONTO DUTCH TV

Nederland 1, the chief public channel of the Netherlands, will broadcast
the popular Frisian soap Baas boppe baas during the summer. 


EUROPEAN MINORITY LANGUAGE DAILIES ASSOCIATION MEETS IN LUSATIA

The European Association of Daily Newspapers in Minority and Regional
Languages (MIDAS) met in its fifth annual general assembly in
Bautzen/Budy in, Germany. MIDAS expressed its support for the demands of
the local Sorbian-speaking minority and awarded journalists writing in
favour of minority protection. MIDAS member newspapers aim to go on the
internet with a joint e-paper soon. 


100,000 VISIT THE LARGEST YOUTH FESTIVAL IN EUROPE

Around 100,000 visitors and 15,000 competitors come to the Urdd
Eisteddfod every year, the festival being the largest youth festival in
Europe and one where everything is held in the Welsh language. The Urdd
Eisteddfod was established in 1924 for young Welsh speakers.
