The Open Society Institute (OSI) - Director of Roma Initiatives

The Open Society Institute (OSI) seeks candidates for a new position,
the Director of Roma Initiatives.

Job Profile

The OSI Director of Roma Initiatives will coordinate all Roma activities
of OSI and the Soros foundations network, including grantmaking and
advocacy activities. The Director of Roma Initiatives will work in close
cooperation with the relevant Soros network partners including Soros
foundations in Central, Eastern, and South Eastern Europe, relevant
initiatives in areas such as human rights, public health, education,
economic development, media and women's issues, and OSI offices in New
York, London, Budapest and Brussels. 

The Director of Roma Initiatives will be based in Europe, preferably in
Budapest, with frequent travel within Europe. The position reports to a
Roma programs board made up of senior management from the Soros
foundations network and the OSI President.


Tasks
- Further develop the overall OSI strategy on Roma issues, ensure that
it is consistent, has impact and complements activities of other
national and international governmental and nongovernmental actors
- Develop new and expand existing innovative programs and build capacity
in Roma NGOs and Roma individuals to address their own issues
- Develop and maintain an effective system for information and knowledge
sharing among the relevant OSI partners on Roma issues
- Leads and develops strategy for advocacy efforts on Roma issues and be
the main OSI representative in international initiatives such as the
Decade of Roma Inclusion, at international conferences and in
consultations with international partners such as the EU, the World
Bank, UNDP, the Council of Europe, and the OSCE
- Manage budgets in support of the above tasks


Qualifications
- A senior professional with at least 7 years experience in advocacy,
policy-making or international development on minority rights and Roma
- An experienced manager who can analyze complex issues and motivate
people of different nationalities and cultures with strategic direction,
sensitivity, and the power of conviction
- A person who understands and believes in the benefits of information
and knowledge sharing and employs this in his/her work
- A person who is bold, innovative, and a risk-taker and who can move
quickly
- A person who is committed to the values of an open society and their
promotion
- A person who works strategically and is goal oriented and a team
player
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (including
public speaking experience)
- A person who enjoys travel and is willing to travel frequently
- A person who is committed to human rights, to an advocacy rights
agenda, and to capacity building
- A masters degree or higher in an appropriate field (e.g., law,
political science, international relations) is desirable.
