PLAID CYMRU AND SNP CALL FOR UK TO TRANSLATE EU CONSTITUTION INTO WELSH
AND SCOTTISH GAELIC

SNP and Plaid Cymru Euro-MPs have urged the UK Government to get a move
on, if the proposed EU constitution is to be translated into Welsh and
Scots Gaelic ahead of any referendum. However, the Foreign Office in
London told Eurolang that the Constitution would only be translated into
Welsh and that there were "no plans" for translations of any of the
other languages in the UK state.

Bernat Joan i Mari MEP represents the Catalan-speaking Iles Baleares
(Balearic islands) for the independentist Esquerra Republic Catalonia
party. Since he was elected he has been outspoken in his defence of
Catalan in the European Parliament. In the run up to the Spanish vote on
the Constitution this Sunday, Bernat Joan is calling for a Catalan 'No'
vote, and explains to Eurolang readers why. 


VALENCIAN ACADEMY ISSUES STATEMENT ON THE UNITY OF THE LANGUAGE

Acad�mia Valenciana de la Llengua, the official language institution in
Pa�s Valenci�, finally issued a statement last Wednesday establishing
the unity of the Catalan language. 


COMMENT BY AUSTRIAN PARLIAMENT'S PRESIDENT CAUSES UPROAR IN SLOVENIA AND
WITH AUSTRIA'S SLOVENE MINORITY

The President of the Austrian Lower House (National Council), Andreas
Khol, has rejected Slovenia's request to be recognized by Austria as a
legal successor to former Yugoslavia. Khol also said in an interview: 'I
believe kindergartens and schools are more important for the Slovene
minority than bilingual signs'. 


MIRANDESE TRADITIONAL CULTURE CENTRE THREATENED WITH CLOSURE BECAUSE OF
ADMINISTRATIVE MISTAKE

The Mirandese cultural centre Sons da Terra ('Sounds of the Earth')
might close because it has still not received grant money and is
threatened with losing it altogether. Located in Miranda do Douro, Sons
da Terra works on the recovery of Mirandese traditional songs. 


COUNCIL OF EUROPE PUBLISHES FIRST REPORT ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE
EUROPEAN CHARTER FOR REGIONAL OR MINORITY LANGUAGES IN AUSTRIA

The Committee of Experts have recently submitted their first report on
the implementation of the ECRML in Austria. Although the state's efforts
were acknowledged in certain respects, the experts nevertheless still
found need for improvement on many issues.
