Pressures Converge on the Next Pope to Change Policy in Russia

The Russian Orthodox Church, which had thwarted Pope John Paul II�s
lifelong ambition of visiting Russia, sent a delegation to his funeral
last week. However, Patriarch Alexy himself did not attend. While
feelings are hardening on both sides of the East-West divide, a
readiness to improve links with the Moscow Patriarchate is rated as an
important asset in media profiles of the cardinals listed as possible
heirs to the papal throne.
