THE ONLY FINNISH DAILY NEWSPAPER IN SWEDEN GOES BANKRUPT

Sweden�s only Finnish daily newspaper Ruotsin Sanomat has gone bankrupt.
The last issue of the paper was published yesterday. The owner and
editor-in-chief Mr Jukka Tuurala blames the Finnish-speaking readers. 
Paula Tapiola, journalist and producer in the Finnish section of Swedish
National TV (SVT), reports from Stockholm.


TEMPORARY TEACHERS IN EUSKADI PROTEST OVER REQUIREMENT TO LEARN BASQUE

Temporary teachers in primary and secondary education in the Basque
Autonomous Community have been told that they must obtain a certificate
in Euskara before August or they will lose their work contract. A group
of teachers who have not obtained the certificate have been taking
action against the measure to keep their jobs but without passing
�Irale� certificate in Basque. 


GALICIAN GOVERNMENT TAKES A CORU�A CITY COUNCIL TO COURT OVER ILLEGAL
USE OF SPANISH �LA CORU�A�

A Xunta de Galiza (the Galician autonomous government) has lodged a
complaint at the Courts demanding the cancellation of A Coru�a�s City
Council decision giving legal recognition to the Spanish name of the
town �La Coru�a�. The 1983 Law on Galician recognises the original
Galician names of towns as the only official ones and compels
institutions to use Galician.


FRISIAN MINISTER THREATENS TO RESIGN AFTER REJECTION OF HIS PROPOSAL TO
LOWER FRISIAN TEACHING TARGETS

Dr. Bertus Mulder, the Social Democrat minister for culture and language
policy on the Frisian executive, has announced that he will resign if
the Provinsjale Steatenfan Frysl�n (the Frisian parliament) sticks to
its decision to reject his proposal to lower targets for the teaching of
Frisian.
