CATALAN "HAS NO INTEREST" AT ALL ACCORDING TO FRENCH POLITICIANS

A new French school project draft law is currently being discussed in
the French Senate. The draft law intends to restructure the schooling
system in France as well as dealing with all subjects to be taught at
school. During a meeting to discuss the new project draft law, some
French senators brought up the issue of minority or regional languages. 


IBARRETXE PLAN AT THE CENTRE OF THE BASQUE ELECTION CAMPAIGN

As announced by the Basque lehendakari (�president� in Basque) Juan Jos�
Ibarretxe, the Basque elections will be held on the 17th April. The
announcement was made the day after Mr Ibarretxe�s communication in the
Spanish Congreso (Spanish Parliament) regarding his Plan for a greater
autonomy. Mr. Ibarretxe has called for all political parties, including
the outlawed Batasuna party to be allowed to take part. 


SINGER TO LEAD WELSH LANGUAGE SOCIETY

A Welsh language hip-hop artist has been elected as chair of Cymdeithas
yr Iaith Gymraeg (the Welsh Language Society) at the society�s annual
general meeting last Saturday. Steffan Cravos, 29, from the Welsh
capital Cardiff is a former singer of the radical hip-hop band Y Tystion
(The Witnesses). He is also a part time DJ and works full time for
Sgript Cymru, a company of new writers. 


ITALIAN GOVERNMENT HINDERS IMPLEMENTATION OF THE LAW PROTECTING THE
SLOVENE MINORITY

Four years have passed since the Italian Parliament approved the law for
the protection of the Slovene minority but nothing has changed for the
members of the community. The Law 38/2001 still waits to be implemented. 


END OF LOW GERMAN DEPARTMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GOETTINGEN

What has been feared for so long has now finally come true: after 50
years of existence, the Department of Low German at the
Georg-August-University of G�ttingen in Lower Saxony has shut down.
