HUNGARIAN NGOs in TRANSYLVANIA ESTABLISHES A UNION
CLUJ-NAPOCA � A number of 68 ethnic Hunharian non-governmental
organizations established at Cluj-Napoca, the Union of Hungarian
(Magyars) Civil Organizations in Transylvania (UOCMT).
The new Union aims at representing the ethnic Hungarian civil society in
the committees of the foundations administering the money received for
the Magyar community in Romania.
Somai Istvan, one of the founders of the UOCMT claims the right of civil
control is aimed at being exercised regarding the spending of the funds
allotted by the Government in Romania and Hungary to the Magyars in
Transylvania. "We want to prevent as well as at taking definite actions,
in the event the interests of the Hungarian community are endangered",
stated Somai Istvan.
Egri Istvan was designated UOCMT president and Bodo Barna and Kolumban
Gabor vice-presidents.
The non-governmental organizations decided to organize training classes
on drawing-up projects to attract some funds necessary for the Hungarian
community.

FIRST SCHOOL MEDIATORS FOR ETHNIC ROMA
CLUJ NAPOCA � The first series of school mediators for ethnic Roma has
graduated on Friday, September 10, in national and European premiere,
the classes that are a part of PHARE project "Access to education of the
depressed groups, focusing upon ethnic Roma".
The spokesperson of Cluj County School Inspectorate Corina Pop said this
project initiated by Ministry of Education and Research and financed by
the European Union aims at increasing the quality of pre-university
education, preventing the early school abandonment of Roma children
through ensuring the second chance in education for the youngsters who
have not finalized the compulsory studies.
"In order to improve the education quality the Roma children benefit
from, to ensure the school opening towards the community and in order to
contribute to the diminishing of the school abandonment and non-school
training, a new professional category would be established that eases up
the liaison between the school and the Roma community. Thus, the Trades
Code in Romania encloses a new profession, namely that of school
mediator", explained ISJ Cluj-Napoca representative.
The 70 school mediators attended a special course for nine months,
organized at Pedagogic College "Gheorghe Lazar" in Cluj-Napoca.
The funds of the project sum up EUR8.33 mn, of which 7 million come from
the European Union and the rest from the Government of Romania.

MEDIA CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE DISCRIMINATION OF ROMA CHILREN
BUCHAREST � A media campaign called �Discrimination kills dreams� was
launched on September 14 countrywide, which aims at rendering people
more responsive to the discrimination cases of Roma children in schools.
�We want at rendering the wide public more responsive to Roma children�s
problems in Romania and we aim at contributing at a wide social
support�, stated UNICEF representative in Romania Pierre Poupard.
The media campaign �Discrimination kills dreams� supposes the broadcast
of two TV ads, of some promotion materials in the written press, radio
and outdoor as well as of booklets meant for adults as well as for Roma
children. In addition, the schools would host various public debates in
the attempt to find joint solutions to the problems connected to the
Roma children discrimination. According to a poll of Gallup, published
last year, 93.4% of the Romanians would not accept ethnic Roma as
members of their own family. On the other hand, 45.7% of the Romanians
do not accept ethnic Roma�s presence in their own locality and 36%
prefer the ethnic Roma are forced to live separately from the rest of
the society, being convinced they cannot integrate.
