Roma Rights and Advocacy Training & Roma Advocacy Projects

I.      Training

Minority Rights Group International (MRG) invites you to apply for
participation in a training seminar on Roma Rights and Advocacy. The
training will take place in Sofia from 5 to 8 November 2004. The
application deadline is 27 September 2004.

The cost of travel, accommodation, and meals will be covered by MRG for
all successful applicants.

MRG invites young people active in Roma organizations from Albania,
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic,
Macedonia, Hungary, Kosovo, Serbia and Montenegro, and Slovakia to the
training. Applications from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia,
and Kosovo are particularly welcomed. Roma girls and women are strongly
encouraged to apply.

The training is part of the second stage of MRGs three-year Roma
advocacy programme. It will be followed by advocacy activities at local,
national, and international levels.

II.                 Training Programme

 The Training will:

        Focus on advocacy strategies;
        Develop the participants advocacy skills;
        Address the issues of monitoring, evaluation and
self-evaluation of advocacy work;
        Explore how international standards and mechanisms can be
useful for addressing local problems;
        Train participants to write shadow reports for treaty bodies
and how to make interventions before human rights bodies;

        Convey more in-depth information about minority rights
instruments and mechanisms operating through various fora.

   III. Advocacy Project (Learning by Doing)

Trainees will be provided with the opportunity to deliver a six-month
in-country advocacy project after the training. MRG will assist
activities that require a relatively small amount of support to be
implemented (up to GBP ?2000) but can nevertheless have an important
impact on the promotion and protection of Roma rights at the local
level.

Applicants are required to send a description of their project proposal
before the training in Sofia. A special format for projects description
is provided within the application form.

 Project proposals will be discussed at the training seminar.
 The final version of project proposals should be submitted to MRG one
week after the training. MRG will select and announce the short listed
projects two weeks later.

IV.             Selection of the Trainees

Participants at the training will be selected on the basis of their
initial advocacy project proposal (50%); their educational and
professional background (25%); and their organizations' institutional
capacity and commitment (25%) to raise awareness and advocate for Roma
rights.

Participants should have experience in advocacy work, commitment to
human and minority rights, very good English language skills.
