Georgia not ready for return of Meskhetian Turks

Tbilisi, 25 October: A session of the Council of Europe Parliamentary
Assembly's Monitoring Committee opened in the Georgian parliament today
with a lengthy presentation from Georgian Parliament Chair Nino
Burjanadze.

Burjanadze spoke about Georgia's obligations, including the return of
the Meskhetian Turks to Georgia. According to her, it is difficult to
meet the obligation concerning the Meskhetian Turks at a time when there
are 300,000 refugees from Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia.
Nevertheless, the Georgian parliament is actively working on this
problem, she said.

Georgia has to settle the problem of the Meskhetian Turks by 2010.
