POLICE TAKE DOWN 'SZEKLER LAND' ROAD SIGN
COVASNA - Police in Covasna County on 23 November dismantled a road sign
marking the entrance to Szeklers' Land", RFE/RL reported. The trilingual
sign (in Romanian, Hungarian, and English) had been placed by Hungarian
Democratic Federation of Romania (UDMR) politicians at crossing point
between the Brasov and Covasna counties.
UDMR parliamentary deputy Sandor Tamas said that the sign is a symbolic
"first step toward autonomy" for the lands inhabited by that Hungarian
minority group, and that the UDMR intends to submit to parliament a
draft bill in which "Szeklers' Land" is designated as one of Romania's
"development regions". Covasna County Prefect Horia Grama said police
"did their duty", as the road sign was illegal. Early Grama threatened
to remove the sign "with bulldozers, if need be".

UDMR TO MAKE RECOMMENDATION IN THE RUN-OFF OF THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS
BUCHAREST� Hungarian Democratic Federation of Romania (UDMR) wants to
make a recommendation for one of the two candidates in the event of a
second polling of the presidential elections, stated on November 23 the
candidate of the Union Marko Bela."We could let the electorate decide in
the end", stated Marko. He reminded at the previous elections, the Union
made such recommendations for a second polling. Marko Bela said it is
possible a post-electoral collaboration with the Union PSD+PUR or with
Alliance PNL-PD, both parties submitting offers in that respect. UDMR
candidate said that UDMR prepared a team in case of the participation to
the governing but no decision was made regarding the persons.

JURISPRUDENCE BOOK ON FIGHTING ETHNIC DISCRIMINATION
BUCHAREST � Within the project implemented by the Roma NGO Romani CRISS,
"Influencing the policies to fight discrimination against the ethnic
Roma and the implementation of the anti-discrimination in Romania�,
supported by Foundation for an Open Society through the program
Campaigns of the Open Society, was the first work of jurisprudence on
ethnic Roma discrimination in Romania, informs a press release.
�The implementation of the anti-discrimination legislation in Romania:
Fighting ethnic discrimination through judiciary procedures� is
accomplished by Av. Dezideriu Gergely and Madalin Morteanu, a work made
up of various cases solved by different institutions in Romania.
The object of these cases is the ethnic discrimination within the
context of the existent legislation as well as of that recently enacted
by our country from the perspective of the admission process to the
European Union. The work tries to emphasize, through the comparison with
the protection system against discrimination, the Roma as a vulnerable
topic of this phenomenon, within the legislative context recently
enacted in Romania.

ARTDEAL� FESTIVAL OF YOUNG ETHNIC HUNGARIAN ARTISTS FROM TRANSYLVANIA
BUCHAREST � For a week, during November 20-28, on the occasion of
Festival ArtDeal � the festival on the Hungarian art of the young
generation in Romania � people in Bucharest saw the pieces of art and
culture of the Magyars in Transylvania.
Initiated by Communitas Foundation, the festival offered the occasion
that through theater, film, music, photographic art and multimedia, the
projects of the Hungarian minorities are rendered available, out of the
desire to prove that different does not necessarily mean incapable to be
understood. "People in Transylvania in general and ethnic Hungarians in
Transylvania in particular are a factor of diversity insufficiently
exploited. People in Bucharest know little about what the people in
Transylvania can really accomplish", stated the initiator of the event.
