NEW EDITION OF INTERETHNIC THEATRE FESTIVAL
BUCHAREST � The second edition of the Interethnic Theatre Festival from
Timisoara (Western Romania) is to take place on May 14-23 under the
patronage of premier Adrian Nastase. The festivity is the result of the
initiative of the National Theatre from Timisoara, of the State German
Theatre from Timisoara and of the Magyar Theatre ''Csiky Gergely'' from
Timisoara and it is part of European culture project deployed in present
and involving 27 countries and 151 ethnicities. The festival will gather
approx. 800 people of theatre - actors, dramatists, theater scientists �
following that over the ten days of the event 23 shows to be presented,
performed by 18 professional theaters. This event will also be attended
by the Romanian department of Serbian Theatre ''Sterija'' and Belgrade�s
National Theatre. The shows are to be performed in the mother language
of Hungarians, Germans, Jews and Serbians, the organizers assuring
simultaneous translation into Romanian language.

EU MONEY FOR IMPROVEMENT OF ROMA�S CONDITION
BUCHAREST - The Delegation of the European Commission and the Romanian
Government�s Department for Interethnic Relations launched last week the
call for proposals under the EU financed Phare programme �Support for
the National Strategy for the Improvement of the Condition of the Roma�,
worth 4,452,000 Euro. The purpose of this programme is to enhance the
participation of Roma communities in the economic, social and
educational life of the Romanian society and to improve their access to
health services. The grant scheme focuses on three priorities that aim
at the social inclusion of the Roma: access to the labour market, to
health services, to decent housing and local infrastructure.

GREATER ROMANIA PARTY DELEGATION VISITS AUSCHWITZ
AUSCHWITZ � A delegation of the extremist Greater Romania Party (PRM)
headed by Chairman Corneliu Vadim Tudor visited the Nazi concentration
camp at Auschwitz in Poland from 6-8 May, RFE/RL reported. Vadim Tudor,
who until recently denied the Holocaust, said the memory of the
Holocaust should be preserved, as should the memory of "other crimes
against humanity." He added that everyone has a "moral duty to fight
evil." Several parliamentarians and some 100 PRM members joined Tudor on
the trip. Tudor is a well-known Holocaust denier and a deputy chairman
of the Marshal Ion Antonescu League but recently he declared is
regreting his past and has truly changed.

GERMAN WRITER BORN IN ROMANIA AWARDED
BERLIN � The writer Herta Muller, originating from Banat region (Western
Romania), was awarded last week with prize for literature by ''Konrad
Adenauer'' Foundation, Rompres news agency reported. The foundation,
part in the Democrat Christian Union, awarded the prize due to Muller�s
novels and essays were debating issues such as dictatorship and fate of
national minorities in East Europe. Rompres says the prize, featuring
EUR 15,000, has been handed over to her on Sunday May 16 in Weimar, when
the reasons display is held by pastor Joachim Gauck, president of
Association "Against forgetting � for democracy".
