ATTEMPTS TO SPEAK IRISH IN PARLIAMENT UNDERSCORE NEED FOR UPGRADED

When Irish MEP Se?n ? Neachtain attempted to deliver his
intervention on Thursday during the debate on the election of Jos?
Barroso as President of the European Commission, he was stopped in his
tracks. The reason: ? Neachtain was speaking Gaelic. 



A LINGUISTICALLY DIVERSE DAY IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT: BERNAT JOAN MEP
USES CATALAN, BERTIE AHERN USES IRISH

The recently elected Catalan independentist MEP Bernat Joan used Catalan
in the plenary session of the European Parliament held yesterday in
Strasbourg in order to request official status for the language. In
addition, Irish leader Bertie Ahern launched his speech in Irish. 



NEW MEPs ARE QUICK TO PRESS MINORITY ISSUES

The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF/FNS) has recently commenced
work on a research study on linguistic diversity and language competency
in Switzerland.

With today's election of Josep Borrell Fontelles to the presidency of
the European Parliament, that body acquires its second consecutive
leader representing a lesser-used language community.
