ROMANIAN SENATE REJECTS SZEKLER AUTONOMY BILL
BUCHAREST � The upper house Senate on 29 June rejected a bill for the
autonomy of the lands inhabited by the Szeklers -- a group within
Romania's Hungarian minority, RFE/RL reported. The bill was only
supported by 12 deputies representing the Hungarian Democratic
Federation of Romania. The Chamber of Deputies has already rejected the
bill.

RULING PARTY STOPS CO-OPERATIING WITH ETHNIC HUNGARIANS IN SOME
TRANSYLVANIAN TOWNS
BUCHAREST � The regional organisation of the ruling Social Democratic
Party (PSD) in Cluj and Bistrita (Transylvania region) decided to break
its co-operation agreement with the Hungarian Democratic Union of
Romania (UDMR) at the local level. In an announcement on 27 June, Cluj
PSD leader Ioan Rus said this was because UDMR had chosen to work with
the opposition National Liberal Party-Democratic Party alliance in the
Cluj municipal council.

ROMANIAN, MOLDOVAN LEADERS TO CELEBRATE PRINCE STEPHEN SEPARATELY
BUCHAREST � Romanian Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana said on 1 July that
no agreement has been reached on a joint declaration that would have
made possible Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin's participation in the
ceremonies at Putna monastery marking the 500th anniversary of Prince
Stephen the Great's death, RFE/RL reported. Moldovan presidential
adviser Sergiu Mocanu visited Bucharest to negotiate the joint
statement. Geoana said he "regrets" that Voronin will not attend the
event, adding that the failure to reach agreement on the joint statement
"should not be dramatized." He said the negotiations with Mocanu were a
"useful exercise" and that the next months will bring about an "intense
and very honest" dialogue between the two countries. A statement issued
in Chisinau by the presidential office said time was "too short" to
reach an agreement but called the parleys in Bucharest "very open and
constructive,". The Moldovan statement denied that Voronin had
conditioned his visit to Putna on a joint declaration. It said, "The two
presidents opted to mark the anniversary with their respective citizens"
and that "the dialogue will be resumed shortly."

ROMANIA LAUNCHES NATIONAL CAMPAIGN ON DISCRIMINATION AWARENESS
BUCHAREST � Press Monitoring Agency non-governmental organization
launched last week a project on defending and promoting human�s rights
and fundamental liberties through fighting discrimination in the
Romanian society.
The project has two parts: the drawing up of a report on fighting
discrimination and on the efficiency of the governmental and
non-governmental initiatives and the organization of anti-discrimination
social campaign in mass media. The main discriminated categories in
Romania are ethnic Roma, the persons with other sexual orientations, the
women and the handicapped persons. Most of the times, the discriminated
persons are not aware of their rights and are not familiar with the
institution �National Council to Fight Discrimination�which was
especially established to deal with the problems they face.

NEW CLASSES OF MAGYAR LANGUAGE FOR CSANGO MINORITY
BACAU � Starting next school year, the facultative teaching of Magyar
language will be expanded in several elementary schools in Moldova
inhabited by Csango minority.
According to data provided by the Union of Magyar Csango in Moldova
(UCM), 286 parents requested the teaching of Magyar language as mother
tongue, which means 15 new classes of pupils are to be established. In
this case, the localities of Csango minority will have 24 Magyar classes
with almost 430 pupils.
