Promoting Civic Education in Romania

The Csiki Foundation is a non-governmental Romanian organization, which
aim is to support the social, economical and ecological development of
the region, and to strengthen the culture of peace, tolerance and
multiculturalism. The Foundation works for the development of
interethnic relations: conflict resolution and strengthening a peaceful
cultural environment within the frame of a democratic and tolerant
society. The goal of the Foundation is to draw people's attention to the
importance of pacifism, non-violent conflict resolution,
multiculturalism and human rights, especially minority rights in the
region.

The Csiki Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Education and
Research is launching the "High-schools Competition on Promoting Civic
Education" proiect, financed by the EUROPEAN UNION -supported through
Phare - Civic Education Component. 

The project period is 9 month and the place of proiect is Miercurea Ciuc
and other 11 different cities in all over Romania: Targu Mures,
Bucuresti, Sighetu-Marmatiei, Medgidia, Timisoara, Nadlac, Brasov,
Miercurea Ciuc, Sfantu Gheorghe, Iasi, Oradea, Craiova. 

The project objective is to promote civic education by training and
supporting students of different nationality and their schools to
initiate different activities and events related to civic knowledge,
activities by which these high schools will be in competition.

The target group are approximately 6.000 students from the 12 schools
(500 students/school), 120 teachers from the 12 high-school (10
teachers/school), 60.000 inhabitants (youth, parents) from the 12 cities
(5.000 inhabitants/city). The direct target group are 48 students from
12 high-schools (4 students from each school), their age is between
15-20 years.

Activities during the proiect are the following: a series of training
sessions and workshops on civic education issues: human rights, 
relation between human rights and responsabilities, common
responsability for eliminating social exclusion, marginalization,
intolerance and violence, importance of diversity and interculturality,
interethnic and religious tolerance, etics in society, campaigns against
rasial discrimination, protection of environment and development of
democratic school structure.
The first training session will be held in Miercurea Ciuc, on 22-25
January 2004. At this training will participate students selected from
different high-schools from the Art High-school from Targu Mures,
Theoretical High-school "Mikes Kelemen" from Sfantu Gheorghe,
Theoretical High-school "Octavian Goga" from Miercurea Ciuc, and
Theoretical High-school "Ady Endre" from Oradea

The training sessions will be followed by high-schools competition,
which consists of planning and organizing different extracurricular
activities related to international events (International Day for the
Elimination of Racial Discrimination, International Day of Roma,
International Day of Women's Rights, International Day of Refugees,
International Day of Earth and International Day of Human Rights).
Students will organize different activities like: debates among students
and specialists, competitions and exhibitions, different entertainments,
role plays, performance, cultural and sport events related to the event,
games, simulation games, planning and creating student councils,
organizing elections, planning media campaigns or creating their school
radio or other publication, different charity programs for the community
and marginalized children who live in unfavorable conditions.

At the end of the project there will be an awarding event in Miercurea
Ciuc and will be created an exhibition on the students' work and
materials created during the activity.
