The Research Center on Interethnic Relations (CCRIT) from Cluj Napoca -
Romania, together with the Sociology Department of the
"Babes-Bolyai" University Cluj organizes a three-year program aimed at
enhancing the quality of teaching social and cultural anthropology in
Central Eastern Europe. The program is carried out in the framework of
the Regional Seminars for Excellence in Teaching and supported by the
Higher Education Support Program of the Open Society Institute (Soros
Foundation).
The project includes the organization of regional summer-session, when
scholars meet in order to discuss topics relevant for their research
and teaching, and inter-session activities concerning research with
the students and visiting lectures. Project related expenses are
covered by HESP.

Project Description:
The aim of the project is to facilitate the development of cultural and
social anthropology as academic disciplines in the post-communist region
by promoting collaboration among the scholars from Eastern European and
Western universities. Its primarily goals consists of working out
effective methods of transmitting to students not only theoretical
knowledge about research strategies, but also skills of doing fieldwork,
empirical data-analysis and interpretation. These abilities can be
nurtured especially through their active implication in research and
academic debates.
The program implies summer-schools where young scholars from the region
and from Western universities meet and discuss issues relevant for their
research and teaching. Participants will benefit from the guidance
offered by senior scholars who agreed to collaborate as resource persons
for the project. There have been planned three such meetings, the first
one taking place in Cluj Napoca, Romania:
September 2003 - Anthropological Reflections on Current Social Problems
July 2004 - Anthropological Approaches on Ethnicity - Cultural and
Social Identities
July 2005 - Anthropological Perspectives on Urban and Rural
Restructuring
During the inter-sessions period, project participants are expected to
engage in organizing local teaching workshops, co-ordinate country-level
literature monitoring and reviews in English done by their students, and
involve students in the research activities planned at the summer
sessions. Junior scholars from Western universities will be involved in
both classroom and fieldwork activities.
The expected project outcomes regard the renewal of syllabuses for
anthropology courses, laying the basis of teaching resource centers in
the region, a better monitoring of currently published studies, a more
effective involvement of students in research activities, and initiating
visiting-lecturer and student exchange programs between the
participating faculties.
The resources of the working group will be enlarged by establishing
collaboration with already existing academic networks, such as
international anthropological associations that resource faculty are
affiliated to or regional networks as those within the Academic Network
Initiative of the Civic Education Project.
Participants Eligibility:
Scholars working in the following disciplines are expected to apply:
Social and Cultural Anthropology, Sociology, Political Sciences, and
History.
Eligibility: young scholars from East-Central Europe and Western
Universities.
Target countries from the post-socialist region: Albania,
Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Poland,
Republic of Moldova, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia.
Responsibilities and benefits:
- taking part at the summer-sessions;
- implementing the planned inter-session activities at their home
universities from Eastern Europe (teaching workshops,
publication-monitoring by students, involving students in research
activities);
- holding joint-lectures and seminars together with other project
participants;
Participants from outside the target region have to cover their travel
and living expenses.
All project participants benefit from the guidance of resource persons,
they may use the technical facilities and documentation provided by the
host institutions (BBU Cluj Napoca and CCRIT). Their project-related
expenses will be reimbursed.
Requirements for all applicants:
Applicants are expected to have already obtained a PhD diploma or be PhD
candidates in the social sciences. They must hold a teaching position at
a social sciences department of a university. Teaching assistants and
visiting-lecturers from research-institutions are eligible as well.
Deadline for applications: 5th of July 2003.
The selection committee (composed of members of the resource faculty)
will announce the successful applicants by the 20th of July.
Application procedure:
Candidates are kindly asked to send by e-mail the following documents in
English:
1. An updated curriculum vitae and a list of publications;
2. A statement of purpose describing their motivation to engage in the
project, their expected role in its implementation, and the potential
benefits for their future career as teachers and researchers (500
words);
3. A summary of a study carried out by the applicant OR a writing-sample
from a such a study (1000 words);
4. A completed application-form;
In addition, applicants should post by regular mail:

applicant belongs to.
