Dear friends,

Please find below an advertisement of recruitment of the spring interns
at IMADR Geneva Office. They are looking for four or five interns in
total to monitor the sixty-second session of the United Nations
Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), the
fifty-ninth session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights
(CHR).

Please be aware that IMADR is not in a position to provide any financial
assistance to our interns!

Please note that their application deadline is on 10 February 2003.

RECRUITMENT OF INTERNS FOR THE IMADR OFFICE IN GENEVA
Spring 2003

Aims:
The aims of our internship programme is to provide regional, national or
grassroots human rights activists, and/or students who have strong
concerns over human rights issues, in particular those pertaining to
racism and racial discrimination, with an opportunity to familiarize
themselves with UN human rights mechanisms through their participation
in relevant UN meetings.

Financial and other forms of assistance:
Unfortunately, our organization is not in a position to offer financial
assistance to interns of any type. Neither do we provide accommodation
although our Geneva Office will help interns find lodging in Geneva upon
request.

A. CERD Monitoring Intern
Number of the interns to be recruited: 1 or 2
Venue: Geneva, Switzerland
Period*: 1 - 28 March 2003 (minimum)
* This period will cover an orientation and briefing session (one day),
62nd session of CERD (three weeks), and the time to prepare and produce
reports. The CERD monitoring intern may wish to extend his/her stay so
as to follow the sixtieth session of the United Nations Commission on
Human Rights, which will be held in Geneva from 17 March to 25 April
2003, and other UN meetings. A long-term intern is preferable.
Description:
The CERD Monitoring Intern will follow the sixty-first session of the
United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination,
which will be held in Geneva from 3 to 21 March 2003. Following the
closure of the session, the intern will prepare reports for IMADR. The
intern, if he or she so wishes, may also continue the internship for
monitoring the Commission on Human Rights as described below. His/her
work will be supervised by IMADR Representative to the United Nations.
During the course of the session, the intern(s) will produce a report on
selective states reports, which will be considered by the Committee, as
well as other thematic reports. Following the closure of the session,
the intern(s in a team) will prepare a final report for IMADR. The final
report will be distributed to IMADR's members and partners, and posted
on its web site, whereas the other reportswill be used primarily for
reference by IMADR Geneva Office, International Secretariat, and
interested partners.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Attend all the public meetings of CERD, and take notes.
Give a daily briefing to IMADR Representative to the United Nations.
Maintain regular communication with IMADR Representative to the United
Nations, and keep her informed in particular of: any development in the
working methods of the Committee, including the Committee's partnership
with NGOs; the internal discussion on discrimination against
non-citizens; any discussion on the contribution of the Committee to the
follow-up on the outcomes of the World Conference against Racism.
Prepare reports for distribution among IMADR's members and partners, for
IMADR's newsletter 'CONNECT', and for IMADR's website, respectively.
Write a report on the consideration by the Committee of state parties'
reports at the request of IMADR partners.
Write reports on the thematic issues mentioned above for the use by
IMADR Geneva Office, International Secretariat, and interested partners.
Prepare a final report for distribution among IMADR's members and
partners as well as for IMADR's website, and its summary for IMADR's
newsletter 'CONNECT'.
Make contact with representatives from regional, national or grassroots
NGOs attending the session.
Collect all official UN documents, and any important unofficial
documents for the session.
Collect copies of relevant materials (e.g., shadow reports) submitted by
NGOs.
File all the documents collected during the session in the office
Other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor (BA etc.)
Additional Qualifications: Essential
Exceptional written skills, and good oral communication skills, in
English
Highly organised with excellent attention to detail
Good sense of responsibility
Ability to handle tight deadlines
Knowledge of Microsoft Office programmes in particular Word, and using
the Internet for research
BA in relevant subject area
Interest and knowledge of issues relating to racial discrimination, or
the rights of minorities, indigenous peoples or migrants
Desirable
Knowledge of French
Knowledge of the United Nations human rights treaty monitoring
mechanism, in particular ICERD and its monitoring body, CERD
Good reporting skills
Experience working in, and association with, a (human rights)
non-governmental organisation

B. CHR Monitoring Interns
Number of the interns to be recruited: Three (3)
Venue: Geneva, Switzerland
Period*: 15 March - 2 May 2003 (minimum)
This period will cover an orientation and briefing session (one day),
the 59th session of the Commission on Human Rights (six weeks), and the
time to prepare and produce reports. The CHR monitoring interns may wish
to extend their stay so as to follow other UN meetings. A long-term
intern is preferable.
Description:
The CHR Monitoring Interns will follow the sixtieth session of the
United Nations Commission on Human Rights, which will be held in Geneva
from 17 March to 25 April 2003. Following the closure of the session,
the interns will prepare reports for IMADR. Their work will be
supervised by IMADR Representative to the United Nations. During the
course of the session, the interns will produce, in term, a brief report
from each meeting (two meetings per day every day) on a daily basis, and
following the closure of the session, the interns will work in a team to
prepare a final report for IMADR. The final report will be distributed
to IMADR's members and partners, and posted on its website (see the
final produced on the last session of the Commission on Human Rights at
IMADR website: http://www.imadr.org .
Should they start the internship early, the interns may also attend CERD
(see above for the details).

Write a brief daily report for IMADR UN Representative.
Prepare a final report for distribution among IMADR's members and
partner as well as for IMADR's website, and its summary for IMADR's
newsletter 'CONNECT'.
Assist in preparation of statements.
Make contact with representatives especially from regional, national or
grassroots NGOs attending the session.
Collect all official UN documents, and any important unofficial
documents for the session.
Collect copies of statements which address the issues of IMADR's
interest.
Participate in parallel events organised by governments, UN or NGOs.
File all the documents collected during the session in the office.
Other duties as assigned.
