RFE/RL NEWSLINE Vol. 6, No. 186, Part I, 2 October 2002

AZERBAIJANI PARLIAMENT PASSES LAW ON STATE LANGUAGE. The Milli Mezhlis
passed the law on the state language in its third and final reading on
30 September, Turan reported on 1 October. That law stipulates that all
government business and correspondence must be conducted in the
Azerbaijani language. That requirement might cause problems for some
senior officials - including Prime Minister Artur Rasizade - who do not
speak Azerbaijani fluently, Turan commented on 3 May when the bill
passed its second reading. The new law also requires that new
dictionaries be compiled every five years and that no more than one
sixth of broadcasting by any television or radio station may be in a
language other than Azerbaijani. LF
