Minority Course 2001

Invitation: The Minority Course 2001 for young Europeans active in
NGOs

With this Hojskolen Ostersoen in Denmark would like to bring to your
notice the following European event for young active NGO-members or
students interested in European and minority issues to be held in the
summer 2001. We hope you will distribute this information within the
networks that you are a part of.

The Minority Course 2001 is a youth meeting aimed at enhancing
intercultural understanding between 65 young Europeans representing
the national, cultural and linguistic minorities of Europe and the
dominating population-groups. The event takes place from July 22nd to
August 11th 2001 at Hjskolen stersen in Denmark, the main
organiser.

"The Minority Course experience"

The Minority Course has been carried out 4 times since 1997. Over 250
young Europeans representing up to 40 different backgrounds are now
familiar with the "Minority Course experience" of living and learning
closely together over a period of time while debating the future of
Europe.

The Courses have traditionally focussed on minority issues narrowly
defined. However the 2001 Course will be a little experimental and
will try and explore other current European issues. Issues, where the
experiences of minorities are especially relevant and with important
democratic implications needed to be discussed among young Europeans.
A Europe of regions, minority and regional issues in the context of
the EU-enlargement, cultural rights in the context of the new EU
Charter of Fundamental Rights and finally the importance of a European
dimension of an active citizenship (how to participate on a European
level).

The practical aim of the Course is to make a "Catalogue of European
Ideas and Impressions". A booklet of articles on the above issues
written by the participants themselves during the event. The
dissemination of the Catalogue to NGOs throughout Europe will be done
after the Course with the active help of the participants.
Participants should also be prepared to contribute before the event
with a short one-page essay to be made available to the other
participants and Europe generally at the website of the project
(www.people.hojoster.dk - see below).

The main content of the event is lectures introducing the above issues
and the participant's own contributions in various workshops and
discussions. Beside the practical aim of making and disseminating the
"Catalogue of European Ideas and Impressions", another important aim
of the Minority Course 2001 is to simply open the participant's eyes
for the many different shades and colours of Europe. "The event should
promote a consciousness that respects differences".

It is important to underline that the Minority Course is not an
academic course. The subjects will be broadly introduced leading to a
general discussion. The aim of the Course is just as much the
personal, social and intercultural learning as is the formal learning
in lectures. This means that the Minority Course is also a social
event, where close personal friendships and contacts will evolve, and
which can serve as the basis of a future network among the 65
participants.

Practical information

Hjskolen stersen is a Folk High School located in the Danish-German
border region with a Danish, German and Frisian minority. The region
has in the past been the centre of many violent conflicts between
Denmark and Germany. The relations between the countries have since
improved at lot, and the region is now characterised by peaceful
co-existence among its populations-groups and cross-border
co-operation.

Young Europeans between the age of 18 and 25, and either active in an
NGO or students especially interested in minority and European issues,
are invited. We seek to invite an equal number of participants
representing minority and majority backgrounds and East, Central and
West Europe. An application-form should be send to Hjskolen stersen
before March 12th for East and Central European applicants and April
9th for West European applicants. To participate, English must be
understood, spoken and well written. This is a necessity. There is a
participation fee of 100 EURO. This includes travels to and from
Denmark, board and lodging for the 3 weeks and the programme.

The Minority Course 2001 is carried out with the support of the
European Commission.

The website Peoplesite

The provisional programme of the Minority Course 2001 is available at
the website of the project "Peoplesite" at www.people.hojoster.dk.
Information about the 1997-2000 Minority Courses are available at the
site as well as debate forums, updates from Serbia, Basque Country,
Romania and Northern Ireland from former participants, NGO profiles,
article-database and a chatpage, and we invite you to contribute to
the life of this web-community. The application-form is also available
at the website. An electronic newsletter about the Course is
available. If you have any questions, you are very welcome to contact
co-ordinator Jesper Nielsen at [email protected], telephone: +45 74 62
