There exist segregated Romany schools only for Romany

Jarovice / SLOVAK REP. (Edmund Mueller for RNN) December the 8th, 1999

Today and yesterday I visited with Danish television Romany community
in villages - Jarovnice and Hermanovce, where were big floods before 2
years. 53 Romanies died because of floods. For me it is an important
new knowledge about those villages. There exist segregated Romany
schools only for Romany children and only for Slovak children. I asked
Roma and nonRoma why Romany children are placed in the different basic
school - only for Roma. Explanation is very an interesting. NonRomany
parents refused fact that their children will learn in same school
with Romany children. They "democratically asked mayor of village" for
elections about this question in City Council. NonRomany deputies
"democratically" voted for segregation of Romany children in different
school. Also regional state school department "democratically decided"
about segregation of Romany children in school for only Romanies.
Mayor told me that elections are democratically and the fact that
Romany children are only in school for Roma - it is OK.

I am really tired from these "OK democratic decisions about
segregation of Romany children". It is not ethic and it is very hard
violation of civil Rights of Romanies. Romany parents are very unhappy
and they asked me for help to give this case on the court. /Sorry my
English is not OK/. I have no money for lawyer. As I know ERRC have no
money also. If you know how can you help me, please inform me. It is
going on Romany children, please help them to stop their segregation.
Believe me after this I can not sleep normally. I would like to help
them from my position.

The report about this story will be in the state Danish television
this week.

CALL FOR INTERNATIONAL ACTION

Concerning : 2nd attempt for deportation of Roma from Belgium to
Slovakia

After the 1st deportation in Europe since WW II of 74 Roma people from
Belgium to Slovakia on the 5th of October, it seems that the Belgian
authorities are launching a 2nd attempt.

Several Roma families have again received an "invitation" to present
themselves at a police station, a Belgian priest whom went instead of
a Roma family was told clearly the aim is to expulse the people back
to Slovakia. The police now gave the Roma till 14th of December to
come to the station themselves, after this day they will be arrested
at home or on the street.

We are asking all democratic and especially all Roma organizations to
write protest letters to the Minister of Interior Affairs, Mr Duquesne
fax 0032 2 504 8500 and the Prime Minister, Mr Verhofstadt fax 0032 2
512 6953. We also ask to discuss and start to organize protest actions
in front of the Belgian Embassy in your country, as we have protested
in the past in front of the Czech Embassy concerning the wall in Usti
nad Labem.

It is time for the Roma all over the world to unite and fight for
their Rights, for human dignity and against all forms of exclusion,
persecution, violent attacks a.s.o.

We've received also news about a police raid in a small town, Drienou
close to Kosice, in Slovakia in which the masked police unit has
opened fire on Roma and killed at least a boy of 14 years old and
injured several others. If any of you could confirm this to us it
would be greatly appreciated, as soon as this awful message is
confirmed we should demonstrate also in front of the Slovakian Embassy
all over Europe. We have to stand up and raise our voices!

I hope many of you will meet our appeal for help and solidarity, we
await your news,
Friendly Greetings,
Aven Baxthalo

Klin Criticizes Swiss Treatment of Roma at Press Conference in Berlin

Berlin / GERMANY (RNN Agency) December the 9th, 1999

Professor Dr. Walter Klin presented a report at a press conference in
Berlin, condemning the Swiss deportation practice of the Roma. The
report was issued by the Forum Against Racism (FaR), a Swiss human
rights group. The FaR, in light of the deportation practice, accused
the Swiss of repeating the rascist practices of their past.

Violence, economical and social discrimination against the Roma has
increased alarmingly in various East European States. The Roma have
been in particular danger in Kosovo, where, although they make up 15%
of the population, they do not belong to any dominant ethnic group.

Montenegro Roma refugee camp destroyed

MONTENEGRO / KOSOVO (Tanja Peric for RNN) December the 8th, 1999

I have just called a representative of World Vision Montenegro, who
told me that very strong winds in a storm two days ago destroyed 135
and damaged 50 tents in the Konik refugee camp for Roma from Kosovo in
Podgorica, Montenegro. Podgorica-based daily Vijesti reported
yesterday (Dec 7) that eight people were injured in the storm.
Practically, the camp is gone. There are no inhabitable tents left.

The refugees - and we are talking about almost 4000 people - are now
crammed into some 50 barracks in the neighbourhood, under horrifying
living conditions, or staying with friends and relatives.

According to World Vision, for a long time now a number of
international NGOs were offering financial support for building solid
structures for Roma refugees. Nevertheless, for months now, the local
authorities are failing to approve such projects, as they say that it
is not permissible to build residences in the area where the building
should take place. The local authorities also disapproved on projects
providing any infrastructure services (water supply, etc) to refugees.
