Spiritual leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan condemn nationalism,
xenophobia and propagation of ethnic superiority

Baku, 29 November. MPA: Upon initiative of Patriarch of Moscow and All
Russia Alexis II a meeting of spiritual leaders of Armenia and
Azerbaijan - sheikh-ul-islam Ghaji Allahshukur Pashazade and
Catholicos of all Armenians Garegin II took place on 23-24 November in
Moscow's St. Daniel Monastery. At a press conference following the
meeting, Head of the Governance of the Muslims of the Caucasus noted
that for the first time representatives of Nagorno-Karabakh did not
participate in such negotiations. Participants of the meeting
discussed possibilities to solve the Karabakh conflict and to free the
prisoners of war. Armenian side had promised to search the archives
and to consider possible return of Azerbaijani prisoners of war
according to a list submitted by the Azerbaijani side. As Mr.
Pashazade had noted, a meeting with the President of Russian
Federation Vladimir Putin was characterised by an atmosphere of mutual
understanding. They considered the situation in the Caucasus and in
the Middle East, ways to solve the Karabakh conflict, as well as the
prospective visit of Russian leader to Baku. Touching upon the
situation in Chechnia, the Head of the Muslims of the Caucasus stated
that although Azerbaijan opposes the terrorism, he also opposes the
use of force against the civilian population. As a result of the
spiritual leaders' meeting, a common declaration and an address to the
presidents of Armenia, Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation was
adopted, which condemns nationalism, xenophobia and propagation of
ethnic superiority.

Note: The Bishop of Baku and Caspian Sea region Alexander took part in
this meeting as well.
