E-NEWS FROM UNITED
05/12/2001 (part 1)

Since the attacks on the United States of 11 September we have seen
two very dangerous effects on our societies in Europe:
1. New anti-terrorist laws that ignore civil rights in favour of (the
illusion of) security and safety
2. The increase of xenophobia and islamophobia

19 December 2001 - 2 YEARS IN PRISON

FREEDOM FOR AXEL, HARALD, MATTHIAS, RUDOLF AND SABINE

Since May 17th 2001 Harald Glde (who has been active within the
UNITED network for years), Axel Haug, Matthias Borgmann, Sabine Eckle
and Rudolf Schindler are on trial. They are accused of being members
of the "Revolutionary Cells" (RZ) according to Paragraph 129a
(Membership of a Terrorist Organisation) and facing charges for two
minor bombings. After their arrest (resp. in December 1999 and May
2000) they have been in prison. All charges issued by the German
Federal Bureau for Prosecution (BAW) are purely based on evidence
given by one chief witness. He once faced the same charges, but has
been released and sentenced to two years probation after he turned
into a paid chief witness for the prosecution.

According to general legal standards, this case is very weak indeed.
In reports by the media, statements by leading politicians and
observations by German and international human rights organisations,
serious doubts were raised about the constitutional character of the
court case, focusing on the controversial and contradictory role of
the chief witness and the highly disputed 'Paragraph 129a'.

We ask the judge to release the prisoners and drop the charges!

If you agree: please send us a message. We will forward it to the
judge, the prisoners and the German support group of the prisoners.

MORE INFORMATION ON ISLAMOPHOBIA

The Commission on British Muslims and Islamophobia has published
several booklets on islamophobia. Most interesting is their listing of
web resources. You may want to organise events around this topic in
the coming months (for example during the European-wide Action Week
16-24 March 2001). Take a look at
