New higher education institution to be established in former Yugoslav
Republic of Macedonia 


SKOPJE, 30 November 2000 -- Issued on behalf of the SEE University
Foundation: 

On 29 and 30 November 2000, the Board of the international foundation
created to establish a new private higher education institution in the
former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (SEE University Foundation) was
constituted in Zurich, Switzerland. 

The Board Members include Max van der Stoel, OSCE High Commissioner on
National Minorities; Dr. Alajdin Abazi, Branch Director Kreditna Banka
A.D. Skopje (former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia); Dr. Roberto
Carneiro, Former Minister of Education, Professor Catholic University
of Portugal (Portugal); Dr. Dennis Farrington, Deputy Secretary,
University of Sterling (UK); Prof. Dr. Jan De Groof, President
European Association for Education Law and Policy, Professor
University of Ghent (Belgium), Dr. George S. Papadopoulos, Former
Deputy Director Education, OECD (France). Two additional board members
form the United States and Switzerland will be announced shortly. The
board elected Max van der Stoel as its first chairman. 

The purpose of the international Foundation is to manage international
funds for the new institution, to provide international expert and
executive support to the implementation of the project, as well as to
establish appropriate legal structures for the new institution in the
former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. 

The new higher education institution shall have a European,
international and modern orientation, while being committed to the
Albanian language and culture. It shall reach high academic quality by
international standards. It is planned that the new institution will
open its doors on 1 October 2001. 

At its first session, the Board decided to invite Dr. Aladijn Abazi to
serve as Director of the Institution to be established. A revised
business plan was adopted as a reference document of the Foundation
and will soon be distributed to interested parties. As set out in the
business plan, it was decided to establish working groups to address
in detail curriculum, staffing and other important issues. The working
groups will include international experts as well as local academics
and professionals in former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. 

The business plan for the new private institution has been distributed
to interested parties and is also available in electronic format on
the website of the OSCE Mission to Skopje at www.osce.org/skopje
