Leader of the Opposition of Kazakhstan Severely Beaten in
Bishkek

On December 1 Petr Svoyik, who came to Bishkek at the invitation of the
Kyrgyz Government to participate in a conference, "Democratic Processes
in
Central Asia", was beaten by four unknown people in masks at about 11
p.m. in his room at the Hotel Salima where he was staying with his wife.

Petr Svoyik is a co-chairman of the political movement "Azamat" which
opposes the policies of the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan
Hazarbaev.

Petr Svoyik believes that his attackers, who burst into his room and
beat him, were from the security services of Kazakhstan and that they
were trying to intimidate and break him.

Unfortunately, the organizing committee for the conference did not react
in any way to this political incident and furthermore did not even
inform the participants of the large forum about the events of the
previous day, once they had gathered for the discussion of the problems
of democracy in the countries of Central Asia .
