The Report contains an in-depth analysis of both historic and
contemporary development of multiethnic and multicultural societies in
Southeast Europe with particular regard to numerous ethnic minorities
living across the region. The processes of nation-state formation in
close relation with Ottoman and Habsburgh heritage including severe
inter-ethnic conflicts, migrations and ethnic cleansing are only some
of the elements thoroughly examined in view of the consequences of
recent events in the war-torn former Yugoslavia. The Report also
covers the issues of  national legislation, recognition or
non-recognition of ethnic minorities, status of refugees in the former
Yugoslavia and their right to citizenship.

The text also contains Recommendations as well as the list of
respective international documents and standards related with minority
rights protection and thus will be of interest to all those both
concerned about raising awareness and formulating strategies and
mechanisms of resolving inter-ethnic conflicts in the region.
