RESIDENTS OF SAMTSKHE-JAVAKHETI ARE AGAINST RETURN OF MESKHETIAN TURKS

Baku. 9 November. MPA: Recent statements of the President of Georgia
E.Shevardnadze about the possibility of the Meskhetian Turks' return
to the area of their former residence in Georgia (Samtskhe-Javakheti)
within 10-12 years [see MINELRES posting of 2 November, 2000 at
http://racoon.riga.lv/minelres/archive//11022000-16:27:46-26877.html -
moderator] caused negative reaction of the residents of this region.
As Georgian media reported, at the Georgian parliament's sitting on 7
November, MP Anzor Tamarashvili, on behalf of his fellow-countrymen,
expressed non-confidence to Guram Mamulia, head of the Repatriation
department of the Ministry of Refugees and Resettlement Affairs, who
elaborated the plan of the Meskhetian Turks' return. As Tamarashvili
said, 5 thousand signatures have been collected against settlement of
the Meskhetian Turks in Samtskhe-Javakheti.
