Serb Rom wins appeal for residency in Australia
Copmanhurst (AUSTRALIA), 30 October 1999

President of Romani Association of Australia, Jimmie Storey, announced
today that Paja Jovanovic had succeeded in his appeal against an
earlier Immigration decision to refuse him a Protection Status Visa,
the means by which persons gain residency in Australia on the basis
their status as a refugee as defined in UN covenants. The Immigration
Review Tribunal has now accepted Pajas claim to be a refugee from
persecution experienced in Serbia because of his Romani ethnicity, and
to have a well-founded fear of the consequences should he be
repatriated to Serbia.

Pajas appeal was assisted by the Romani Association of Australia
collecting and collating documents that gave evidence of racial
persecution of Roma in Serbia. The ERRC provided valuable assistance
in locating and forwarding documents to the RAA at short notice. The
documents were forwarded to the Immigration Review Tribunal through
Pajas legal representative. Pajas appeal was also assisted by the
attendance of Jimmie Storey at the hearing.

Jimmie said it was a great day for Paja and it was a great day for the
RAA. The success of this case could make it much easier for Roma in
the Balkans area to have their claims for refugee status to be
accepted by Australia.

Roma Refugees permitted to cross into Germany
Rozvadov/CZECH REP., Waldhaus/GERMANY (RNN Correspondent)
November 1st, 1999

A group of Roma on the way from the Czech Republic to the United
Kingdom, travelling with a Bus together with other non-Roma, were
stopped at the German border and send back to the Czech Republic.

The German Border Controllers claimed that the Roma did not have the
one hundred German Marks per diem all foreigners are required to have
before entry. The Roma insisted that they had enough money and were
able to
present it. The Border Controllers have been asked to comment on any
questions relating to the situation, posed to them by both the RNC and
a Czech TV Station.
