PRESS RELEASE

Roma Union shocked at inactivity for decades towards KZ-physician

Frankfurt-Main/Germany (RNN Correspondent) 03.11.1998

Only when KZ-physician MƯnch, a former doctor in the concentration
camps, gave a typical interview, in which he described the experiments
with human beings in the concentration camps as "very important for
science", the public prosecutor of Munich went to work.

MƯnch had said without any remorse that the destruction of Jews had
caused "technical problems" and that there had been "ideal working
conditions" in the concentration camps. Roma and Sinti as well had
been victims of inhuman experiments. Most of the physicians who became
guilty during the national socialism have never been called to account
and started a career after 1945. Public remarks like that from writer
Martin Walser, receiver of the peace award of the German booktrade,
support a social climate that admits ignorance and repression. He
wants to make responsibility and guilt of Auschwitz a private and
personal matter, leaving it to fall in oblivion. A climate like this
humbles the victims and their children's children a second time and
absolves the perpetrators.

Roma Union turns on the term "Landfahrer" ("country travellers") and
demands the installation of a "transit place"

Frankfurt-Main/Germany (RNN Correspondent) 04.11.1998

In the dispute about the installation of a transit place for Sinti and
Roma the parliamentary party of CDU speaks of "Landfahrer" (country
travellers), who should not be allowed to stay in Frankfurt/Main. The
Roma Union points out that this term is as discriminating as the term
"gypsies" and must not be used according to the recommendation of the
Hessian minister of the interior and the agreement for the protection
of minorities.

The Roma Union appreciates the rejection of the CDU request by SPD,
FDP, and GrƯne. They once more emphasize the urgency of setting up
such a place. It would solve the present problems of waste disposal
and provisional camping. The Roma Union also offers support in
organizing and running the place.
