International Alert is a non-governmental organisation which analyses
the
causes of conflicts within countries, enables mediation and dialogue to
take
place, sets standards of conduct that avoid violence and helps to
develop
the skills necessary to resolve conflict non-violently.
 
International Alert's programme work in the Former Soviet Union has been
evolving during the course of the past five years. We are presently
working
in Georgia/Abkhazia and the Northern Caucasus. Often projects are
undertaken
in liaison with regional organisations. The type of work has included
conflict resolution workshops, fact-finding missions and facilitation
processes.
 
We are seeking an experienced Programme Manager to continue the work of
the
outgoing manager. You  must be a fluent English & Russian speaker with
in-depth knowledge of the North Caucasus. You must be able to travel to
the
region and to write reports and proposals for further programme
development.
You will be educated to degree level, preferably in international
relations
or politics. You must also have at least 5 years' practical experience
of
conflict resolution and/or development.

Salary in the region of �25-30K depending on qualifications and
experience.
The post is based at International Alert's offices in central London.

FORMER SOVIET UNION - PROGRAMME MANAGER
 
International Alert is a non-governmental organisation, based in London,

International Alert's programme work in the former Soviet Union has been

Responsible to: Associate Director
 
Purpose of job:  The Project Officer is responsible for taking forward a
general programme of work within the former Soviet Republics.
 
Duties:

-   strategic development of the programme

-   planning, budgeting, implementation and development of International
Alert's programmes in the former Soviet Union
 
-   organisation of International Alert missions, conferences, seminars
and
other activities as appropriate to the missions
 
-   preparation of International Alert reports on programme areas, or in
follow-up to missions, conferences, etc
 
-   co-ordination of and support for consultants and other contracted-in
experts in pursuance of the aims of the programme
 
-   representing International Alert at all levels, at conferences,
seminars or on missions as appropriate
 
-   to provide detailed project proposals and budgets in support of
fund-raising
 
-   to carry out research on the programme
 
-   production of reports and publications
 
PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential
 
-   field experience in development, conflict resolution or a related
area
-   academic training in the field of conflict resolution, international
relations, politics or related area
-   proven organisational ability
-   excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
-   fluent English
-   fluent Russian
-   basic financial management skills
-   typing/word processing
-   availability to travel
-   report writing skills
-   specialist knowledge of the former Soviet Republics
-   commitment to the aims of International Alert

Desirable

-   practical experience in the provision of training
-   experience of conflict resolution theory, mediation, conciliation
-   knowledge or experience of international, humanitarian, human rights
or
constitutional law

International Alert is a no smoking office.
 
This is a full-time post and the contract will run initially for one
year.
Salary will be in the range of 25-30K, dependent on qualifications and
experience. Benefits include 25 days holiday per annum, life assurance
and
pension contribution.
