Dear colleagues,

Fourth international seminar on Democracy and Human Rights in
Multiethnic Societies, held in the first week of July, 2001, in
Konjic, B&H, is behind us. People from 22 countries took part or
attended the event, while inquiries and interests to take part came
from 40 countries. Regrettably, although the organizers have this time
been able to invite a number of participants from South East European
countries, a bulk of our colleagues from East European, Asian and
African countries, interested to join us, were again not able to come
due to financial or even visa obstacles. For the first time, we had
participants from New Zealand, Colombia, Malaysia and Kosovo
(Yugoslavia). Such a growing interest in the event encouraged us to
continue with our friendly and fruitful gathering. This year`s seminar
participants, as well as the past years' seminars participants, like
Bodo Weber, David Chandler, Richard Lewis, Dejan Guzina, Peter Emerson
and many others, vowed to go on with our discussions and the Institute
for Strengthening Democracy, Konjic, B&H, decided to continue with the
Seminar next year.

In order to make a tentative program, I request you to let me know as
soon as posible if you are interested in submitting papers, taking
part in discussions, or simply attending the seminar. Working titles
of presentations are welcomed.

I encourage participants to suggest and organize workshops and panels.

A number of grants for travel and accomodation are available owing to
the already provided support from the University of Bergen, Norway,
Programme for South Eastern Europe (Centre for International
University Cooperation and Norwegian Research Council). Organizers
hope to ensure additional grants for participants from East Europe,
Asia and Africa, and are undertaking necessary moves to provide it
timely. This can also be considered as an invitation to foundations
which were reluctant so far, to shore our endeavour up. I myself am
sure that the Andrew's Participant for Participant Fund will be
functioning this time as well.

Please also feel free to re-transmit this note to whomever might be
interested.

Sincerely,
Dzemal Sokolovic,
Director of the Institute for Strengthening Democracy in Bosnia
