Conference Announcement: Facing Ethnic Conflicts


Facing Ethnic Conflicts: Perspectives from Research and Policy-making, 
Center for Development Research, University of Bonn, 14-16 December
2000

The conference will bring together different strands of debate on
ethnic conflict by inviting policy-makers with various institutional
backgrounds, ranging from NATO to NGOs, and scholars representing a
wide range of theoretical approaches and regional expertise. The
conference will provide a platform for policy-makers and researchers
to discuss how to prevent or settle violent forms of ethnic strife,
and how to reach durable peace; present the state of the art, whenever
possible on a comparative, cross-regional basis, of research and
policy approaches to ethnic conflict; and offer an environment for an
open debate, including a critical assessments of policies and
scholarly approaches, an exchange of views, and the search for a
possible common ground.

Speakers include Donald Horowitz, Donald Rothchild, Mari Fitzduff, Max
van der Stoel, Rogers Brubaker, Milton J. Esman, Walker Connor, Hurst
Hannum, Wolfgang Petritsch, Paul Collier, Carl Bildt, and John W.
McDonald.
